Our Mission Identity
Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a forward-moving, intergenerational, eclectic Lutheran Christian congregation, anchored in Word and Sacrament, traditional yet creative, grounding its life in the grace of the gospel, living with faith and prayer’s power and ambiguity**, and caring for one another, our community, and God’s beloved world.
**Few people speak of faith and prayer’s “ambiguity”. We lift it up because our namesake, “Gethsemane”, is a place/time where Jesus prayed without having an overt/clear response from God as he did in his baptism or when he was transfigured or when he prayed for healing for people. After he prayed in Gethsemane, Jesus needed to get up and simply go on, trusting (living by faith) that God was present. Holding faith and prayer’s “power and ambiguity” together, we will be a place where saints, seekers, and skeptics are together on the journey of faith.
Our Mission Vision
“Exploring and expressing Christian faith and inviting others to join us on this journey”.
Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
“Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want but what you want.” (Mark 14:36 Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane)
